What Wellness Has to Do with Website Design

Or running a business.

Let’s be honest—most entrepreneurs have spent at least some time operating in survival mode. We push through. We tell ourselves we’ll rest later. We put off meals, skip workouts, and ignore the signs that our bodies (and minds) are over it.

I’ve done it. For years.

There were times when I thought the late nights, skipped lunches, and blurry boundaries were just part of running a business. Hustle hard, rest later. Right?

And then I got cancer.

Everything stopped.

I didn’t get to decide when or how I slowed down—my body made the call for me. The schedule, the deadlines, the running list of to-dos… none of it mattered in those first weeks of diagnosis. Survival did.

Suddenly, taking care of myself wasn’t an inconvenience. It was the whole point.

Wellness isn't a side note.

During treatment and recovery, I had no choice but to shift how I worked. I wasn’t operating at full speed, mentally or physically. And even when I wanted to push through and just get things done, my body had other plans.

But here’s the surprise: my creativity didn’t vanish.
In fact, once the fog started to clear and I found a rhythm of real rest, nourishment, and intentional movement—my work got better.

I made sharper decisions.
I created cleaner, more strategic designs.
I communicated with clients more clearly, and I started recognizing when I was forcing versus flowing.

What started as survival turned into something else entirely: clarity.

Creativity needs fuel. Strategy needs space.

If you’re constantly switching tasks, chasing deadlines, or depriving yourself of basic needs—there’s no room to think clearly. You’re not solving problems; you’re patching holes. And let me tell you: clients can feel that.

We’re not robots.
We’re creative professionals solving real problems for real people. That takes energy, intuition, focus, and presence. All of which rely on your well-being.

Your brain literally works better when you’re hydrated, well-fed, and rested. Your nervous system calms down. Your attention sharpens. You see patterns and ideas more clearly. And that kind of clarity? It’s where good design comes from.

Your nusiness reflects your energy.

I’ve seen it again and again—burnt-out business owners trying to breathe life into something they used to love, wondering why everything feels harder. The ideas aren’t landing. The marketing feels off. Even the day-to-day stuff starts to feel clunky or disconnected.

And it’s not because the business is broken.
It’s not because they’re doing anything wrong.

It’s because they’re running on empty, trying to make big decisions from a place of depletion.

When you’re worn thin, clarity gets muddy.
You second-guess things you used to trust.
You stall on launches. You spin in circles over what used to be simple. You start overthinking every move—not because you’re indecisive, but because you’re exhausted.

And that’s where wellness comes in.

When you take care of your health—mentally, physically, emotionally—you start to see again. You’re sharper. More aligned. You simplify. You act. You stop chasing perfection and start creating from a grounded place.

Your energy doesn’t just affect your mindset.
It shapes how you lead, how you show up, and how your business feels to the people you serve.

What I do differently now.

Since walking through cancer (twice), I’ve learned not to ignore the signs. I take breaks. I eat real food. I protect my schedule. I give myself space to process before I react. I move my body. I rest.

And I don’t just do this for myself.
I do it because it makes me a better business owner, a better designer, a better collaborator, and a better leader.

The goal isn’t balance—it’s sustainability.
I’m in this for the long game. And that means building systems, routines, and habits that support my energy—not drain it.

If your tired, you're not alone.

There’s no gold star for burning yourself out.
There’s no extra credit for pushing through when what you really need is a pause.

If you’ve been feeling off, foggy, or just plain worn down—this is your reminder: it’s okay to step back.
It’s okay to rest.
And it’s more than okay to build a business that doesn’t cost you your health.

Wellness and business aren’t at odds.
They’re partners in the work that actually lasts.
