What a Brand Refresh Really Means

What a Brand Refresh Really Means

...and when you might need one!

Let’s get one thing clear:
A brand refresh isn’t just about swapping fonts or updating your logo.

When done right, it’s about coming home to your business—and making sure every piece of your brand reflects who you are now, not who you were when you started.

At JI Design, we recently went through not one, but two brand refreshes:

  • One for JI Design & Marketing, our creative agency
  • And one for Jen Inspired Wellness, our coaching brand

They look different, but they share the same goal:
To align the visuals, voice, and strategy with the deeper mission behind each brand.

So... what is a brand refresh?

A brand refresh is a strategic update to your visual identity, messaging, or overall vibe—without changing the heart of your business.

It’s what you do when your business has grown, evolved, or shifted—and the way you’re showing up no longer fits.

Think of it like cleaning out your closet:
You’re not becoming someone new. You’re just making sure what you wear fits the season you’re in.

Signs you might be ready for a brand refresh

  • Your website or logo feels outdated or off-brand
  • Your messaging no longer reflects what you do
  • You’ve niched down or expanded your offerings
  • You feel a little “meh” about your brand presence
  • You’ve grown—and your brand hasn’t caught up

What our own refresh taught us

For JI Design, we kept the roots: strategic, creative, grounded. But we let go of anything that felt too buttoned-up or detached.
We brought in fonts and colors that feel clear, confident, and real—just like the businesses we work with.
And we rewrote our messaging to better reflect our personality: fun but focused, playful but professional.

For Jen Inspired Wellness, the shift was even more personal.
That brand needed space to evolve with me—through healing, clarity, and purpose.
It’s no longer just about nutrition or movement. It’s about aligned living and business, built on wellness that actually works.

The Process (And Why It’s More Than a Logo Swap)

For both brands, we kept the logos the same. That’s not always the case—but we started from a solid foundation with proper vector files (EPS format).
That’s not true for every client.

We’ve done this kind of refresh work for other brands too—even years ago. For example, Samson Tug & Barge didn’t need a new logo, just subtle refinements and a proper vector version to support all their marketing needs. Small updates, big difference.

Color updates.

  • For Jen Inspired Wellness, we completely shifted the palette—new tones, new mood, new direction.
  • For JI Design, we kept our signature colors but added a lighter blue to bring softness and contrast.

Font updates.

We dropped Baskerville—not because it wasn’t beautiful, but because it no longer fit the look and feel of our updated visuals.

The rest of our choices were about ease and consistency: fonts like Red Hat Display and Open Sans are clean, modern, and easy to use across platforms.

We also added a touch of script—just enough to bring some personality and playfulness without overcomplicating the brand.

Messaging.

This was the biggest shift—and it looked different for each brand.

For JI Design, it meant revisiting the heart of who we work with, what we stand for, and how to sound more like us.
Less polished and distant—more grounded, real, and clear. We stripped away anything that felt overly formal and leaned into a voice that feels confident, strategic, and approachable.

For Jen Inspired Wellness, the messaging shift came from something deeper: finally owning the niche.
Instead of trying to speak to everyone interested in wellness, we focused on women in business—those navigating growth, burnout, purpose, and alignment.
It was scary to narrow in, but absolutely necessary. That clarity made everything else sharper: the tone, the language, the offers. It finally feels aligned—with both the work and the woman behind it.

Then comes the rollout.

Once everything is aligned? You still have to switch it all:
Website. Proposals. Social templates. Slide decks. Email signatures.
It’s a lot. But it’s worth it—because your brand finally feels like you again.

A brand refresh is a strategy move.

It gives you the chance to:

  • Refocus your energy
  • Reconnect with your audience
  • Show up more clearly and consistently
  • Build a brand that lasts, not just one that “pops”

Thinking about a refresh?

You don’t have to throw it all out and start over.
Sometimes, the smartest move is just a thoughtful update that brings your brand into alignment.

We do that kind of work every day—and if you’re ready, we’re here.
