How to Make Your Website Visible in AI Search

How to Make Your Website Visible in AI Search

Search is shifting under our feet.

People still type questions into Google, but more of them are asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews instead. Those tools don’t hand back a list of ten blue links. They answer the question directly, and they decide which businesses to name. That changes the job. Ranking on page one still matters, but there’s a second target now: getting cited inside the AI answer itself. That second target has a name. It’s called generative engine optimization, or GEO.

What is GEO?

SEO helps your pages rank in search results. GEO helps your pages get pulled into AI-generated answers.

The simplest way to think about it: SEO helps a person find your page. GEO helps an AI system use your page when it builds its response. One earns the click. The other earns the mention. You may also see this called AEO, or answer engine optimization, a term used interchangeably with GEO in most contexts.

Where SEO and GEO Overlap

Here's the good news.

You don’t have to choose, and most of the work you’d do for one helps the other. Both reward the same fundamentals: clear, trustworthy, well-organized content. Research from Semrush found that AI answers tend to pull from pages that already rank well in Google, which means strong SEO is still one of the most reliable ways to get noticed by AI tools. If a page is easy for a person to read and trust, it’s usually easy for an AI system to quote.

Where They Part Ways

The difference is the finish line.

SEO is competing for a ranked link. GEO is competing for a single sentence inside an answer. That shifts how you write. GEO rewards content that reads like a direct, useful answer to a real question, not a page stuffed with keywords. It leans on natural-language questions, plain answers, fresh information, and your name showing up in trustworthy places across the web.

Where To Start

You don't need new software to begin. You need content that's easy to quote.

A few things that move the needle:
  • Answer the real questions your customers ask, in plain language, near the top of the page.
  • Keep it factual and current. Outdated pages get skipped.
  • Use headings, short paragraphs, lists, and tables so the structure is obvious.
  • Build out an FAQ that answers common questions in a sentence or two.
  • Build real authority on the topics you want to be known for, so other credible sites mention you.
  • Add schema markup so machines can read what your page is about.
This isn’t new. It’s the same clarity good web design has always been after. The AI shift is mostly another reason to finally get it done.

A Word On The Tools

And the hype.

There’s a whole crop of GEO tools now: Profound, Otterly, SE Ranking, Semrush’s AI visibility tracking, and others. They track where and how often AI engines mention you, which sources those engines pull from, and how you stack up against competitors.

They’re useful once you have enough volume to measure. But this market is young and noisy. Plenty of tools simply rebadged old SEO features as GEO, and at least one early GEO startup has already closed its doors. For most small businesses, the tracking can wait. The content work cannot.

Why This Matters For Your Business

If you run a small business in the Pacific Northwest, your next customer might never see your homepage.

They might just ask an AI tool who does what you do, and take the two or three names it gives them. You want to be one of those names.

That comes down to one thing: whether your site is clear, current, and trustworthy enough for an AI system to repeat. Which, conveniently, is the same thing that makes it work for the humans you’re trying to reach in the first place.

That’s the work we do at JI Design. If your site is dated, thin, or quietly telling AI tools the wrong things about your business, now is the time to fix it, while most of your competitors haven’t noticed the ground moved.

FAQ's

We could just tell you FAQs help you show up in AI search. We’d rather show you. You’re looking at one.
What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO helps your website rank in search results, so people can find and click your page. GEO helps your content get named inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity. One earns the click. The other earns the mention.
Yes. AI tools tend to pull from pages that already rank well in Google, so strong SEO is one of the most reliable ways to get noticed by AI. The two work together. Doing GEO does not mean walking away from SEO.
Write clear, factual content that answers the real questions your customers ask. Keep pages current, use simple structure like headings and lists, add an FAQ, and build a reputation on the topics you want to be known for so other trusted sites mention you. Adding schema markup helps AI tools understand what your page is about.
Schema markup is a bit of code added to your website that spells out what your content actually is, like a business, a service, a review, or an FAQ. Visitors never see it, but it helps search engines and AI tools read your page correctly instead of guessing. That can make you eligible for richer search results and makes it easier for AI to pull accurate information about your business.
AEO stands for answer engine optimization, which means optimizing your content to be the direct answer to a question, whether that shows up in a featured snippet, a voice assistant, or an AI answer. It overlaps heavily with GEO, and many people now use the terms interchangeably. The practical difference is small: both reward clear content that answers a question directly.
No, though plenty of tools market it that way. They share the same foundation of clear, trustworthy content, but the goal is different. SEO competes for a ranked link, while GEO competes for a mention inside an AI answer.
It’s worth paying attention to, but you don’t need to panic or buy new software. The smartest move is to get the content fundamentals right now: clear pages, real answers, current information. That work helps you with both regular search and AI search, and it’s the part that matters most.
Yes. Our free SEO Audit now includes GEO checks alongside the usual SEO review. It looks at whether AI crawlers can read your content, whether your business identity is marked up correctly, and whether you’re being cited in Google’s AI Overviews. Run one on your site and you’ll know in about a minute.
